Chicago Citation & Referencing Guide

Format of Citations: Superscripts & Footnotes

Format

  • A superscript number is placed right after you paraphrase or quote from an author's work
  • Then a footnote with the corresponding number is placed at the bottom of the same page (Microsoft Word will do both for you. See section on Word for details)

To create a citation in Word, place the cursor where you want the superscript to be and choose References from the options at the top of the screen and then the 'Insert Footnote' option. This creates the superscript number and then adds a blank footnote at the bottom of the page with the corresponding number.

Enter the publication details of the book/article in the blank footnote.

The superscript numbers will follow a numerical sequence, i.e. 1, 2, 3, and so on within each Word document.

When a publication is cited a second time, a shortened version of the previous footnote is used.
