Chicago Citation & Referencing Guide

Introduction to Chicago Style

There are 2 main types of referencing with the Chicago style-
(1) Notes and bibliography
(2) Author and date references

The following information describes the Notes and Bibliography style.

With this type of the Chicago Style, you use footnotes at the end of the page with superscript number at point of quotation/paraphrasing and bibliography (alphabetically listed by author/editor surname) at end of your assignment/thesis.
Bibliographies should also include any works which you used as part of your research or which influenced your thinking.

N.B.: You should always check for any particular rules your school will want you to follow when writing assignments/theses and including citations and bibliographies.

This guide refers to the 17th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style, 2017. There are copies of the Manual available in the Library to consult.
