Chicago Citation & Referencing Guide

Why Cite?

Why Cite? The Reasons for Citing & Referencing

Goals of citing
(1) To show how you have developed your research & ideas.
(2) To identify & credit sources you use
(3) To be honest about what is your idea & what you have taken from elsewhere, & so avoid plagiarism
(4) Give your readers sufficient information so they can access the source & further their research, or to verify your sources.

When to Cite-
(1) When you are using distinctive ideas or words that are not your own
(2) When you paraphrase or quote someone else’s words
