Mainie Jellett and Evie Hone Exhibition

A new exhibition opens in the National Gallery of Ireland today, April 10 - Mainie Jellett and Evie Hone - The Art of Friendship.

The National Gallery describes the exhibition as being "dedicated to the pioneering Irish modernists Mainie Jellett and Evie Hone, and brings together 90 of their works of art. It explores their friendship and shared experiences while studying in Paris during the early 1920s, and traces their careers back to Ireland...Featuring paintings, stained glass, and preparatory drawings, it reveals how both women were trailblazers in Irish art although remaining connected to conventional themes such as religion and landscape."

The Art Newspaper wrote a review in anticipation of this exhibition back in January of this year. The review described the National Gallery show, another exhibition on in the Gallery - An Túr Glione: Artists and the Collective -  as well as another exhibition that was in the Hugh Lane Gallery earlier this year. Entitled Dublin Celebrates Three Pioneering Women Who Changed the Face of 20th Art in Ireland, the article includes a wealth of information on all three artists.

"Dublin’s leading art institutions are celebrating three remarkable Irish artists—the portrait painter, patron and activist for Irish art Sarah Purser, and the modernists of a later generation Evie Hone and Mainie Jellett—who in their differing ways contributed strongly to making Ireland an international centre for contemporary art in the first half of the 20th century."

Have a look at the article if you are interested in 20th century Irish Art, and these three influential artists. As the article says, "Purser was nearly a half-century older than Hone and Jellett but many of the challenges that she faced—misogyny in art schools and artistic associations and the conservative nature of both critics and curators—remained intact when Hone and Jellett came to maturity.". The historic details of the art world itself is enlightening, as well as the details of the three artists lives and work.

And, of course, do get out to see their work in person if you get the chance.
