APA 7th Guide - TU Dublin - City Libraries

This is a quick guide on how to use the APA (American Psychological Association) 7th edition referencing system. Examples are given on how to correctly cite and reference the most commonly used information sources.

Reference List

At the end of your work (essay, assignment, project), you should include a reference list.  This should be on the last page of your work, separate from the body of your assignment, and include a reference to every text you have cited in the body of your work.

While many people use “reference list” and “bibliography” interchangeably, the APA views them as two different things.  A bibliography would contain everything you read that influenced your work, including material that did not have any in text citations.  As such, they tend to be longer than a typical reference list.

How To Format Your Reference List

  • Start your reference list on a new page at the end of your document.
  • Provide the title “reference list” or “reference list”, aligned to the centre of the page and in italics.
  • The list should be in alphabetical order going by surname. If the book was published anonymously so you don’t know the surname, you place it in order of the first significant word in the title (ie. The first word excluding “the”, “an” etc.)
  • There is no need to separate out references by type: books, journals, websites etc. can all be listed alongside each other.
  • Your reference should end with a full stop, unless it contains a DOI or URL.  This is because the full stop might interfere with its functionality.
  • If a reference entry is more than a single line long, then you should indent the second and all subsequent lines.
  • There should be double spacing between references.
