Welcome

TU Dublin - City Campus Library APA Guide

At university and beyond, it is important to provide information on your sources when writing.  This is done through referencing.  We do this to:

  • Give credit to the original authors

  • Allow readers to quickly find the source of your information, to seek clarification or read further if necessary

  • Present the depth and scope of your research in an easily identifiable way

The American Psychological Association or APA produce a manual to encourage clear academic writing and ensure that authors give full credit to whatever sources they use when formulating their ideas.  The manual, which is now in its 7th edition, provides specific guidelines on how to cite sources such as books, journal articles, reports, databases, websites and newspapers.

One of the main features of the APA referencing style is that for each source it requires both a short, in-text citation and a longer entry in a reference list at the end of your document.
