Critical Reading

This guide looks at what Critical reading is and how it can help you in your research.

Getting started

Critical reading prepares you to be able to articulate your points well in whatever task or assignment you are working on, this comes from reading a number of sources which should give you a complete picture of how to look at a topic from various angles.

The main consideration here is that when you are writing your assignment, you do not rely on one source for the information you use but you gather information from a number of sources so you need to read each of these sources with an open mind.

As you get started remember that critical reading requires you to evaluate and critic each point of view, argument and evidence presented by any author whom you decide to use in your assignment.

Some considerations to keep you focused

To get the most out of the critical reading process, you need to be organized in how you approach this. The following are some considerations that you need to look at before you embark on the critical reading journey:

  • Are you clear of what the task in hand is asking of you, in other words, do you fully understand research topic?
  • Do you know why you are doing the task in hand?
  • Approach the task with an open mind, do not swayed by any arguments or let any point of view distract you.

Remember you are carrying out the research to present robust discussions in your assignment and this is only possible if you read widely thus getting views to support your accounts from a number of authors.
