ARROW@TU DUBLIN Ethical Concerns And Responsible Use Of Generative Artificial Intelligence In Engineering Education by Aditya Johri, Euan Lindsay and Junaid Qadir ABSTRACT The use of educational technologies that use elements of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) are becoming common across the engineering education terrain. With the wide adoption of generative AI based applications, this trend is only going to grow. Not only is the use of these technologies going to impact teaching, but engineering education research practices are as likely to be affected as well. From data generation and analysis, to writing and presentation, all aspects of research will potentially be shaped. In this practice paper we discuss the ethical implications of the use of generative AI technologies on engineering teaching and engineering education research. We present a discussion of potential and futuristic concerns raised by the use of these technologies. We bring to the fore larger organizational and institutional issues and the need for a framework for responsible use of technology within engineering education. Finally, we engage with the current literature and popular writing on the topic to build an understanding of the issues with the potential to apply them in teaching and research practices.

ARROW@TU DUBLIN ChatGPT: A tool to embrace or ban in academia? by Muhammad Atif Qureshi ABSTRACT ChatGPT is a recent phenomenon under the spotlight and the focus of many discussions in academia for its future promises, together with some concerns that may raise alarms. However first, what is ChatGPT? It is a human-like conversational AI chatbot that allows users to engage in dialogue and conversation on a variety of topics, making it look impressive for the benefit of humans and society. ChatGPT needs human-like intelligence and compelling arguments to hold a conversation, which comes from the large volume of text data on which the tool is trained, that basically acts as the intelligent part of memory. Therefore, it is obvious that anything not part of ChatGPT’s memory will serve as an unknown shred of information and hence, become a natural limitation, i.e. ChatGPT cannot answer questions concerning the missing data from its memory.

Building capacity for social care research - ways of improving research skills for social workers by Andy Pulman and Lee-Ann Fenge ABSTRACT Recent literature in social work/care continues to highlight limited levels of research involvement by practitioners coupled with low confidence and knowledge of research skills. This article reports on findings from a study to develop a better understanding of the challenges of building capacity to undertake social care research in the South of England and opportunities for building research engagement and capacity. It focuses on research skill gaps identified in current training pathways and qualification routes from the perspective of practitioners working in social care. A qualitative approach was undertaken. Participants were practitioners working in local authority social service departments. Participants completed an online questionnaire (n = 22), with a subsample (n = 6) being interviewed. A semi-structured interview schedule collected positive and negative views of research experiences and of using research evidence. Logistical and research skill enablers and research skill barriers were extracted as themes from the data and are described. The authors then discuss possible initiatives that might assist in helping to improve social work practitioner research skills and embedding research into practice.

Faculty Perspectives on Undergraduate Research Skills: Nine Core Skills for Research Success by Boglarka Huddleston, Jeffrey D. Bond, Linda L. Chenoweth and Tracy L. Hull ABSTRACT In an effort to improve information literacy initiatives at Texas Christian University, we sought to understand faculty members’ expectations and perceptions of undergraduate student research skills. We conducted three faculty focus groups (n=21) and an online survey (n=100) of faculty members. This study reveals a set of nine core research skills that faculty members expect students to possess. The study compares faculty members’ expectations against their perceptions of student capability for each of these nine core skills. Furthermore, this study examines who (librarians, faculty, or both) should have responsibility for teaching which research skills. These findings will inform the library’s information literacy initiatives, as well as have a strong influence on the library’s marketing and reference services.

Search strategy development in a flipped library classroom: A student-focused assessment by Michael C. Goates, Gregory M. Nelson and Megan Frost ABSTRACT Librarians at Brigham Young University compared search statement development between traditional lecture and flipped instruction sessions. Students in lecture sessions scored significantly higher on developing search statements than those in flipped sessions. However, student evaluations show a strong preference for pedagogies that incorporate elements from both lecture and flipped methodologies. Reasons for lower flipped-session scores may include a lack of student accountability, strong preference for a live demonstration, and disconnections between online tutorial content and in-class collaborative activities. Librarians using a flipped classroom should consider ways to help students make meaningful connections between online tutorials and in-class activities.

Online search strategy by Ben Lawless and Agora Collingwood ABSTRACT There are many ways to approach the research process, but a common method is one outlined by the 'Big6' model: 1 Task Definition 2 Information Seeking Strategies 3 Location and Access 4 Use of Information 5 Synthesis 6 Evaluation.1 This article will focus on the first three of these steps and how they might relate to an online search strategy. Posing questions like 'What kind of evidence would provide an answer to your query?' can help students to start thinking through the lens of evidence when researching. [...]good researchers know when to stop their current search and switch to a different strategy. Some useful searching tips for students are described below. * Every word matters. * Order matters. * Capitalisation doesn't matter. * Punctuation doesn't matter. * Specific search terms are better - go from broad to more specific enquiries as you learn more while searching. * Use 'Boolean' operators, such as 'AND,' 'OR,' and 'NOT.' * Searching with the term 'filetype:' will narrow searches to specific file types.
