Research Outputs in PURE: User Guidance: Home

This guide is for registered TU Dublin PURE users

What is Pure?

Pure is Technological University Dublin’s Current Research Information System and it is used for collecting a range of information about our University’s Research. Your personal Pure profile consists of information about you such as your position and research and records related to you such as your authored research output or activities your performed. All research outputs are validated by staff in Library Services.

What can I add to my Pure profile?

Pure provides a wide range of categories and sub-categories of research outputs and outputs should be added to the correct category, avoiding the use of ‘other contribution’ as much as possible.

Where research activities have not resulted in a publication, e.g. an invited talk or oral presentation, these can be added as ‘Activities’ instead.

Press/Media activities should be added using the Press/Media data type and not as research outputs.

Doctoral theses cannot be added to Pure at this stage but links to theses available at external locations can be added as a link in the professional information section.

Research outputs which were undertaken at another institution can be added to your Pure profile, but you should make sure your external affiliation is noted on the output.

All published research outputs should be added to your Pure profile. Many of these can be imported from Scopus and/or ORCID but in some cases they may need to be added manually*.

Research staff should keep their profile updated regularly with their latest research outputs. This can be done easily through configuring an automated search with Scopus and/or ORCID*.

Adding content manually

Clicking the "Add new" button in the top right corner of the Personal User screen will take you to the submission guide.

The Submission guide is a shortcut to the most often used output types. For example, if a researcher regularly publishes journal articles, they will see this content type listed at the top.

The guide also contains quick links to browse or search all categories.

How to Add Content to Pure?

Personal Users can update information about the content they have produced or are associated with. For research outputs, this can be done in three ways:

  • Manually

  • Via search in import sources

  • Via import of text files

For example, a journal article can be added with accompanying metadata (title, authors, page numbers etc.). The full text of the article can additionally be uploaded to Pure if the license attached permits it.

Automated Search

To make things easier for you and to ensure you don’t miss some outputs you can also set up an Automated search. This will prompt Pure to search for outputs related to a specific Person once a week (default setting) and will notify that person when a new match is found and from there an import matching process can then be started. Most sources will allow you to add one or more name variants, for example, for people with double barreled names or people who may change their names over time etc. The "Preview Candidates" option enables you to run a trial lookup that shows you if relevant hits were found or if the name variants need more adjustment. It is important to note that in general, matching names is not the most precise or exact method as multiple people may share the same name.

Adding via search in import candidates

You can search outputs indexed in SCOPUS and any of the online sources that Pure is linked with. This will allow you to import the content directly into a designated editor, e.g. importing a journal article will ensure that it is recorded in to the correct category of Research outputs such as, Contribution to journal - Article.
