Tallaght Library Garden

From a tiny seed great things can grow, which is how the Library Garden came about.  Let us take you on a journey, a botanical journey, a library journey, but most of all a splendid journey.  Every journey begins with that tentative first step and this one is no different.  So, we start at the beginning and the WHY the Library Garden idea took root.

During the Covid19 lock down any of us were going stir crazy with the restrictions forced upon us.  For a lot of us during that time our garden was our refuge and became the place we could escape to no matter the size of the garden.  For many they didn’t have the luxury of an outside space, particularly for a lot of students in tiny apartments.  It was this fact that got us thinking about how we could use the courtyard garden the library overlooks.  The garden was well established with some trees and plants, but we wanted to develop it further with some sensory planting, so we asked our head caretaker here in Tallaght if we could add some plants to the Library Garden?  Happily, he said yes, and the Library Garden project seed was planted!  We knew what we wanted to accomplish with the garden, we had the knowledge to begin but no budget to speak of.  This is where we gathered  a gardening tribe.  Our tribe consists of like-minded people, all with an interest in gardening, sustainability, and the environment.  We had a list of plants we wanted for the sensory area of the garden and a list of plants we could swap for those plants.

Some of the sensory plants you will see below.

The library garden is a peaceful place to sit and take a few minutes out of what can be a busy university schedule.  In the garden you will be surrounded be plants of many shades and textures and the sound of the gentle trickle of water from the fountain.

For Green Week we have some seeds collected from the library garden plants to share with you.  Come to the library desk to get a packet of seeds and get growing!
