Citation managers, also known as bibliographic managers or reference management software, are used to gather, collate and organise your references and/or citations. These are softwares and applications that are available online, some are free, while others are fee based.
Most are comprised of an application, with an add-on for your web browser to capture references online, and an add-on for your word processing application to ensure the correct format of citation insertion, and bibliography generation.
Many of these managers can automatically format to a specified citation style (Harvard, Chicago etc.), and generate bibliographies from the citations inserted via the application into your assignment.
Library Services provides support on the following free reference management software:
TU Dublin has been using RefWorks as a referencing management software. The licence for this will expire in December 2024. As a result, data saved can be imported into other referencing software, such as Zotero or Mendeley.
A full list of citation managers and a comparison of their features is available from Wikipedia.
