Help for students doing their first assignment

Starting Your Research

There might be some books & articles on your lecturer’s reading list that will be of help but you will probably need to find some more material to use for your assignment.

Try Browsing

Many students browse the shelves initially to look for books on a topic. Books are shelved in number using the ‘call number’ on the spine of the books. This number stands for a particular subject so books on similar subjects are usually found together. But not always, so…

Use the Library Catalogue (OPAC)- all books (& all other material) held in the TU Dublin libraries is listed on the Library Catalogue. It will give you the number it is on the shelf, which library it’s held in and how many copies we hold. Try a Keyword search to look for material/items on your topic and then find them on the shelves. If you can’t find any item, just ask a librarian for help.

If you find any e-books when you are searching for information, you can click on the link to access the full-text. Just be aware that there are restrictions on how many pages you can download/print out in total, even over a number of days.
