Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912)
A renowned English composer and conductor - of mixed-race descent, Coleridge-Taylor fought against racial prejudice and financial hardship all his life. He was referred to by white musicians in New York city as "the African Mahler" when he toured the United States in the early 1900s.
Famous for skilfully uniting African-American folk music with concert music, he is particularly known for his three cantatas based on the epic poem Song of Hiawatha. This and other pieces by Coleridge-Taylor are available to borrow from the Grangegorman Library manuscript score collection, in addition to two biographies in the main book collection.
Composed by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, this score of four waltzes for the solo piano was bound in London in 1903 and is held in Special Collections in Grangegorman Library.
Part of the D. Dermody Collection originally held in the College of Music.
