Accessibility: Creating accessible social media material

This guide will show library staff how to create accessible posts on social media.

X

This page refers only to posts that are created directly on X. To view how to create a post for X on Hootesuite, view the Hootesuite images page.

Note that video posts must be created on X as we cannot do that on Hootesuite.

Posts with Images

  • To add a post with an image, go to Compose on your feed.
  • Hit the Gallery icon and select your image.
  • Once the screen below pops up, click Add Description and type in your image description. Here is a sample one for this image: Compose Tweet screen on Twitter (X), featuring a picture of a cup of espresso with the subtitle "Morning espresso I must have. Below the image of the coffee cup are options to add description, tag people, and select who can reply".
  • Finally, press Tweet.

Posts with Videos

X is slightly more complicated than Facebook for adding videos. X does not have any way to auto-generate captions right now. Instead you have to upload a separate .srt file. X does not recognise .vtt files. This can be created on Stream or ScreenPal, through the instructions mentioned on our YouTube page

Once you have that .SRT file, you can start to upload your video by following these steps:

  • On X, upload a video using the compose box, and pressing the gallery icon.
  • Find your video and click Open
  • Click Upload Caption file (.srt).
  • Check the interaction settings are set to "Everyone can reply"
  • Finally, select Tweet.
