Khan Academy
This is a free educational resource that offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. Some of the subjects taught are math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. The courses cater for basic to higher level learners using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. This is a very good way to brush up and refresh knowledge.
Kudos for Researchers
Kudos provides a unique one-stop shop for multiple metrics relating to your publications: page views, citations, full text downloads and altmetrics.
Evernote
This is a notetaking service which helps researchers organise their work. The basic service is free and will suffice for most tasks but there are other options that are charged for. Any material you put into Evernote will synch between your phone and computer.
Canva is an online graphic design platform that gives you free access to a wide assortment of design tools and options. With an array of templates to choose from, the simple drag and drop design tools allows you to create infographics to display data and statistics in an interesting way.
Adobe Colour is an app that allows you to try out, create and save various colour schemes with pre-sets based in colour theory. The interactive colour wheel allows you to experiment with different combinations. Adobe Colour is useful for figuring out what colours work together when designing posters, presentations or online content. The desktop version allows you to export a colour scheme directly into Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign.
Fontsquirrel is a database of free high-quality, designer friendly fonts for both academic and commercial use. You can select from their wide range of fonts and download for your own use in designing posters, presentations, and online content.
Powtoon is a cloud-based software for creating animated presentations and tutorial videos. Create your own or select from a ready-made template to create visually engaging, captivating presentations and videos.
Fotobabble is a creation tool that allows users to add narration to photos. The tool is useful for engaging your audience in an integrated way across mobile, web and social media. It allows for class interaction, content creation and commenting and sharing of user-generated submissions. It can also be used on field-trips for media gathering.
Kahoot is a free game-based learning platform that allows you to create fun learning games from a series of multiple choice questions. You can add videos, images and diagrams to your questions to amplify engagement. Games can be played in a group setting where players can join in on their own devices. Ideal for use in research with children but is suitable for all ages.
Desmos is a free online calculator that can instantly plot any equation, from lines and parabolas up through derivatives and Fourier series. Features include graphing, sliders to adjust values, tables, statistics, points of interest and inequalities. The activity Builderallows teachers to build online, interactive Desmos-based classroom activity.
Finding it difficult to locate high quality, copyright free photos online for free? Medium provides links to sites which allow access to licence free, good quality stock photos. Ideal for using in presentations in class or at conferences and seminars.
